How scratch and sniff labels work, and how to make the scent last

Micro-capsules, varnish and a fingernail: what happens inside a scratch-and-sniff label, and the five decisions that decide how strong and how long the scent will be.

A scratch-and-sniff label looks like any printed label until someone scratches it. The trick is a layer of micro-encapsulated fragrance: tiny capsules of fragrance oil, far too small to see, mixed into a varnish and printed over the artwork.

What happens when you scratch

A fingernail breaks a small share of the capsules in the scratched area. The oil inside evaporates and you smell it. The capsules that did not break stay sealed, which is why a good label still smells after many scratches, and why it does not smell at all while it sits untouched in a carton.

Five decisions that shape the result

  1. The scent itself. Fruit, sweet and fresh notes come through clearly on paper. Very subtle or complex perfumes are better matched with a sample round. If you sell a fragrance product, send us the oil or a reference and we match the label to it.
  2. Where the scent sits. The scent layer goes on the part people will touch: the strawberry, the flower, the words "scratch here". A clear prompt in the artwork doubles the number of people who actually try it.
  3. Material. Coated paper is economical and takes the varnish well. Synthetic PP resists moisture and tearing. Clear PET suits stickers that should look like a printed design only, such as tattoo stickers.
  4. Format. Sheets and strips suit giveaways, books and retail packs. Rolls suit labelling machines and hand dispensers on a packing line. Hang tags carry the scent on a bottle or garment without adhesive.
  5. Storage. Keep finished labels sealed and away from heat until use. That protects the capsules far more than any coating.

How we work

We print the artwork, apply the fragrance varnish in-house and send scent samples before mass production, so you can approve both the look and the smell.
